Dear Mr. Staffieri:
Reliable cell phone service is important for the safety of Canadians and the durability of our economy. Yet many of my constituents in Perth—Wellington continue to experience poor cell phone service, especially in rural areas.

Rogers may be a private company, but you do have a responsibility to ensure your rural customers have reliable cell service. I believe all Canadians would agree that Rogers has an obligation to ensure the cell phones we pay for receive reliable service in all parts of the country.

I bring to your attention the complaints I hear regularly from Rogers’ customers about poor service around the village of Monkton, Ontario. The numerous complaints include issues of regular dropped calls and failed connection attempts. In early 2024 I received information stating that Rogers had plans to install a new tower in the Monkton area. After two and a half years of waiting there is still no operational tower. Furthermore, I recently learned that it is not in your “deployment plan” to complete this work in 2026. It is baffling that a tower would be constructed yet sit unused.

I understand that Rogers is objecting to certain rules and obligations imposed on the company by the CRTC. However, there is no denying the overall regulatory environment provided by the federal government has been beneficial to your business and its dominant position in the marketplace. Furthermore, over the past several years Rogers has received millions of dollars in contributions from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

In June 2022 when the federal government approved your acquisition of Shaw Communications Inc., you promised Canadians “robust future investments in Canada’s world class networks” and “significant long-term benefits to Canadian consumers, businesses and the economy.” Four years later, many of my constituents are still waiting on you to make good on this promise.

I urge you to make the necessary investments to ensure all regions of Canada, including Monkton, Ontario and surrounding area, have reliable cell phone services.

Sincerely,

John Nater, M.P.
