Canada Summer Jobs 2017 Employer Application Extended to February 3rd

For Immediate Release

Stratford, ON – John Nater, Member of Parliament for Perth-Wellington announced today that the employer application process for funding under the Canada Summer Jobs 2017 program will open on Monday December 5. This program will create thousands of job opportunities for students across the country.

“Through Canada Summer Jobs, young Canadians have the opportunity to gain the skills and experience they need to get jobs now and in the future. I encourage employers to apply for funding to create jobs that will help students, employers and their local economies.” – John Nater, M.P., Perth-Wellington

The application process will be open from December 5th to February 3rd with notifications to employers going out in early to mid-April.

MP Nater was disappointed that, after lobbying both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, more had not been done to ensure the date for employer notification was moved up to allow earlier hiring.

“University and college students must have an idea of where they will be working in the summer by mid-February” said MP Nater. “The mid-April notification date is much too late for most students  to wait to find out whether or not they have a job.”

Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to help employers create summer job opportunities for students. It is designed to focus on local priorities, while hoping both students and their communities.

Canada Summer Jobs:

  • Provides work experience for students;
  • Supports organizations, including those that provide important community services; and
  • recognizes that local circumstances, community needs and prioritizes vary widely.

Funding will be available to not-for-profit organizations, public sector employees and small businesses (under 50 employees) to hire qualified young people aged 15 to 30, who are full time-students and intend to return to school in the fall. Thousands of young Canadians will benefit from summer employment while helping employers address skills shortages.

The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2017 will be from December 5, 2016 to February 3, 2017.
